2009 FEVI REPORT AND PLANS FOR 2010
Dear FEVI friends, this past year has been of great blessings for the kids we serve in Lumbisi, Tonsupa, Huasalata, and other places in Ecuador. We thank you for your presence in our projects, your love, your work, your ideas, your letters, your generosity.
This past year 2009 we have received in our projects 40 international volunteers from Mexico, the United States, Canada, United Kingdon, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Korea. We have also received in our projects about 50 Ecuadorian volunteers.
In Lumbisi we have been able to construct a new classroom. It was intended to be a play room but now because we increased our service from 40 kids to 60 kids it is being used as a new classroom. It looks prescious, and our new teacher Jaime has also been able to set a small corner for puppet shows for our little kids.
We have new sidewalks, with the help of the mothers of the kids, the teachers, and our volunteers, and friends who contribute for the construction materials. We have been able to pave the sidewalks and make them safer for our little kids. We have also constructed the back wall of the school so that we can make it a safer place.
Our afternoon school is going very well. Our University of Illinois students run the school. We have about 30 kids attending English lessons, and getting help with homework.
Our organic gardens in Lumbisi look prescious! We collect fresh tomatoes, cabbage, fresh herbs, onions, for the elderly people and the kids in the community. Thanks so much for the hard work of the mothers in the community, Ecuadorian and international volunteers.
In Tonsupa, with the help of our summer volunteers, we painted the Gonzalo Pizarro school and we also distributed clothes, toys, toothbrushes and toothpaste to the families and kids in the community.
In Huasalata we did a tooth brushing campaing for the mothers and kids in the community. Our University of Illinois students collected toothbrushes and toothpast and we taught the kids how to use them.
We are still dreaming of the library for the kids in the Lumbisi community, a new playgound for the school in Tonsupa, and we would like to start organic gardening in the Huasalata community. We will again have a summer camp for the kids in the Lumbisi community. We will be doing Art projects, English, Sports, Music, cooking, dancing, playing. We are planning to have the Huasalata and the Tonsupa kids in a visit to Quito so that they can join our Lumbisi summer camp.

KIDS SUMMER CAMP 2009
Our FEVI summer camp 2009 was a great success. Our kids enjoyed art classes with Clarita, they learned how to make their own toys with recycled objects. Had music lessons, played games, enjoyed nice food, went on walks to the forest, had lots of hugs and great conversation with all of our international volunteers who more than anything offered their love to our prescious kids.
We painted the school in Tonsupa, made a mural in the school in Lumbisi. Planted some trees. Laughed, kissed, hugged, talked, played, singed, shared food.
We had young people from Mexico, Korea, England, Spain, France, United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Ecuador.
We thank you all!

MUCHAS GRACIAS POR SU VISITA!
We thank our wonderful volunteers from VFP, and CCIVS, who came from very far away, to work for two weeks, with our kids in Lumbisi. We thank our wonderful Ecuadorian university students who came to spend a day in the Lumbisi forest planting native trees. FIESTA DIA DEL NIÑO
On June first of every year, we celebrate Children´Day. This past Saturday 30th, a group of young friends from Quito decided to have a party with our children in Lumbisi. They dressed up in customs, played with the kids, danced, shared tasty food with them. We thank Anita and her friends for finding a group of kids and having a fabulous party with them.

KIDS TRAGEDY IN LUMBISI
This year, as always in life, we have experienced joy and pain in our hearts.
Intense pain this past April, as six of our prescious kids have died in the Lumbisi river. What a shock for all of us!
Blanca Guaman, Jeimi Tusa, Jessica Herrera, Mayra Ceron, Alex Chuquitarco and Edison Pujota left their school in the morning and went into the San Pedro River in Lumbisi looking for little color fish.
A sudden discharge of water from up the mountain embraced them and took their lifes. Not their hearts, as we always will keep them in our memory.
Daniela, our FEVI psychologist is now working with the parents, brothers and sisters of our little kids.

TOOTH BRUSHING CAMPAIGN IN HUASALATA
The University of Illinois students, and our international volunteer, Nadine, from Canada experienced the joy of sharing our time and expertise on tooth brushing with the little kids in Huasalata indigenous community.
We took toothbrushes and toothpaste for them and advised the kids and their mothers on the importance of tooth brushing.
It was a day of happiness for all of us.

FEVI LEARNING CENTER AND FEVI SUMMER CAMPS
Our FEVI after school program continues without the physical presence of two of the kids who died in the river and who were our afternoon students, Jeimi Tusa and Jessica Herrera. We keep them in our hearts and will continue our hard work inspired in their loving memory.
We teach our kids handcrafts, help them with their homework, take them to our vegetable garden, make walks with them, play sports with them. We invite you to join our team of volunteers to share our talents with them.
This next summer we are preparing to work together with our friends from Volunteers for Peace, and CCIVS in our kids summer camps. Please bring all your great ideas, projects, dreams, to share with our kids.

From Volunteers for Peace participant in our summer school
FEVI is a foundation run by caring people with valuable ambitions. The school I worked in was very new and thus continually evolving. Unsurprisingly, the organization at the school was not perfect. However, I am glad I went to Ecuador, worked, and hopefully contributed to the improvement of what I believe is a great foundation with a worthwhile cause.
My life in Ecuador was divided into two parts: working at the school, and free time when I was not at the school. Working in the school was tiring but rewarding. Although the kids complained just enough to let you know they would rather be doing some other activity, they were also quick to say "buenos días," give me hugs of greeting and farewells, and show their gratitude through gifts of drawings and thank you cards. The children kept me working hard but also having a lot of fun.
Outside of my experience at the school, I greatly enjoyed spending time with my host family. My family was very welcoming. I was introduced to traditional Ecuadorian food through my host mother's cooking, enjoyed practicing Spanish by speaking to my host sisters, and was included in family activities such as my younger sister's birthday party. I sincerely appreciate my family's hospitality and kindness in sharing their home and lives with me.
Another amazing part of my trip was meeting, working with, and spending time with other volunteers. Afternoons and weekends offered time to travel and explore Lumbisí, Cumbaya, Quito, and beyond. I made friends in Ecuador that I will continue to be in contact with for years to come.
I loved Ecuador and hope to return someday. My volunteer experience working in Ecuador with FEVI was excellent and I would recommend the trip to anybody looking to improve their Spanish, to help in a place where it is needed, or just looking to have a good adventure

I feel it is my obligation as well as distinct priviledge to first thank the incredible people at FEVI for the chance to serve this summer.
Secondly I am eternally gratefull for the hospitality shown to me in Quito at FEVI sponsored, Tato´s place, and in Tonsupa with FEVI´s host family, Francisco, Nancy and his four wonderful kids.
I’m studying international relations with an emphasis in development and social justice and my school in the States provided me with a month-long grant to Ecuador in June.
Having previously traveled extensively in my native Colombia, Ecuador provided me with an opportunity to get a glimpse into
what the rest of South America has to offer. I was able to compare the
two countries and found them to be remarkably similar in everything from foods to music to the way Spanish is spoken. I was only in Quito for a few days and in Tonsupa for the majority of my short trip, where I had the pleasure of being welcomed into a community of hard-working, honest people who truly deserve the prosperity FEVI has set out to achieve.

GONZALO PIZARRO SCHOOL (part two)

I was teaching English every morning at the Gonzalo
Pizarro school. I also tried organizing a group of illiterate adults in the afternoons to teach them to read and write, but many never showed up.
Teaching was no easy task mostly due to the number of teachers in the school compared to the number of children, but a good amount of kids really valued my efforts and took advantage of the situation. I am thankful that I was able to establish solid friendships with the children and their families but even more thankful that I represented a positive example for them, even if such a thing was absent in many of their homes.
I have chosen not to mention Tonsupa’s beauty or its genuinely friendly population because if you’re fortunate enough to spend time there, you will see for yourself. Gracias Tonsupa, gracias Ecuador por haberme brindado tanto cariño en tan poquito tiempo. Ustedes merecen un futuro lleno de éxitos y algun día espero regresar a su hermoso país.

WORKING ON THE PRE SCHOOL FENCE IN LUMBISI
This past Saturday we have continued our work on the pre school fence. The mothers of the kids and volunteers work in the construction of the school fence for the safety of our kids who will be attending our new center. We will also soon have the water sewage for bathrooms and the kitchen. We plan to open our Lumbisi child care center on April 2008. We thank the families who have contributed financially for the completion of the pre school construction. And we thank the mothers for their fund raising effort, selling used clothes and performing raffles in order to get the funds for their kids pre school.

THE FENCE AND THE PLAYGROUND
The mothers and Fundacion FEVI staff are raising funds for the construction of the school fence and playground, so that we can finally open our little school to our prescious kids.
We are making a big effort to finish our little school. Once we have the fence and the water system our Lumbisi kids will be able to enjoy their new pre school.

Our children in Lumbisi
Our child care center has an attendance of 40 beautiful kids. Right now they are attending school in a lended room in the local church. The mothers are very active in helping in the construction. We are very happy we are working in a new pre school for the Lumbisi children.

SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION IN LUMBISI
This is our fourth week working in the construction of our FEVI Munequitos de Lumbisi Child Care Center. We join hands every saturday to help in the work of the school. Mothers, volunteers, local students, we all work together for our little kids in Lumbisi.
