CENTRO INFANTIL FEVI/ SANTA INES
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT
Santa Ines child care center is a lovely, sunny space for 30 kids ages 3 to 5 years old. The center was built by the Santa Ines community and Fundacion FEVI, and is located right next to the community soccer stadium. The children have plenty of space for outdor activities.
We opened the Santa Ines center for the kids on April, 2007.
THEME AND AIMS OF THE PROJECT:
Community day care center for kids 3 to 5 years old.
Improve children education and nutrition in this low income community.
Involve the local and international community in learning through service.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES IN THE CENTER
18 years old or older. Patience, heart for children, interest in education, music, art.
Volunteers will assist teachers and mothers in the care, recreation, and education of small kids.
Volunteer will help to prepare and serve food to the kids. Senior volunteers are welcome.
COLEGIO TECNICO LATINOAMERICANO
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Technical high school for low income boys, located in the native community of Lumbisi, in the eastern valley of Quito. LUMBISI is a rural indigenous community, 40 minutes bus ride from Quito.
THEME AND AIMS OF PROJECT:
Improve the technical education of low income, native young boys.
The boys learn Math, Computers, Electricity, Auto Mechanics.
Involve the local and international community in improving the education of low income youth.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN THE PROJECT:
Desire to share time with young boys. Interest in technical education and sports.
Volunteers will assist the teachers in the academics but also in sports, art and environment conservation activities.
COMMUNITY DINING HALL FOR THE ELDERLY

LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Dinning hall for the elderly, resurceless people in Lumbisi, rural village not far from Quito
10 mothers of the community serve food to the elders of the community in this newly constructed community dining hall. Most of the people in Lumbisi are farmers and construction workers. Most of the elderly are illiterate and live in poverty. There is a group of 50 elderly people who are served food in this very nice dining hall.
THEME AND AIMS OF PROJECT:
Provide nutritious meals for 50 elderly people in the community. Involve them in community activities. Organize recreation activities for them. Accompany them to the health center in town.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
Help mother in the community in the kitchen, and serve food to the elderly.
Help them walk around town. Organize recreation activities for them. Read and talk to them. Carry food home to the people who cannot walk to the dining hall. Visit them in their homes. Desire to live and spend time in a rural village not far from Quito.
ESCUELA FISCAL MIXTA FRAY JODOCO RICKE, LUMBISI
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
This public elementary school is located in the small, native community of Lumbisi (a 40 min bus ride from Quito/.
The school has an attendace of 500 young students. Teachers have large numbers of students in each classroom, as the school is understaffed. Most of the parents of the kids are construction workers, farmers, garderners. No stable jobs.
THEME AND AIMS OF PROJECT:
Provide basic education for low income girls and boys, from LUMBISI and other native communities in the area.
Volunteers will help teachers in improving the education of the children and the future of the community.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
18 years old or older. Teaching skills, patience, have a heart for children.
Assist teachers, help kids with problems in school, teach how to read and write. Teach English.
Organize sports activities.
ESCUELA JOSE ANTONIO VELASCO
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Small, community school located in Tumbaco, a small, Andean town 40 minutes bus ride from Quito.
The school has an attendace of 40 kids. It teaches preschool up to 3rd grade. They provide individualized teaching to little kids.
THEME AND AIMS OF PROJECT:
Provide early education to low income boys and girls, in the Tumbaco valley area.
Provide individualized education with emphasis on Art, Music, Theather. Provide learning activities for kids with learning dissabilities.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
18 years old or older. Volunteers will help teachers with Art, body expression, music, a foreign language, handcrafts, games, preparing and helping to serve food for the kids.
Volunteers may live in the project.
FEVI/MUÑEQUITOS DE LUMBISI CHILD CARE CENTER

LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
This childcare center is located in the native community of Lumbisi (a 40 min bus ride from Quito). 40 kids 3 to 5 years old attend this community child care center. Most of the parents of the kids work in agriculture and construction.
THEME AND AIMS OF THE PROJECT:
MUÑEQUITOS de Lumbisi provides care and learning space for about 40 kids. Improve the education, care, and nutrition of little kids.
Presently, Fundacion FEVI is constructing a new facility for the kids, as they now attend a lended space in the local church.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
18 years old or older. Volunteers have to be open-minded, with initiative, creativity, patience and much love for children.
Volunteers will assist the teachers in taking care and feeding the children. They will play and entertain the kids and help the mothers with learning activities and games for the children.
Volunteers are welcome to work in the construction of our new FEVI pre school for these lovely kids.
GRANJAS COMUNITARIAS PERUCHO

LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
The Perucho community farms are located in the small, Andean town of Perucho, two hours bus drive from Quito. People in Perucho are mostly farmers. Perucho is a low altitude valley where people grow agriculture products from the highlands and the cost. Perucho has a priviledged climate, where farmers can grow all sorts of fruits, vegetables and grains.
THEME AND AIMS OF THE PROJECT
The Perucho people have organized themselves in order to improve their ancestral, farming techniques. They will also be teaching the population about environment conservation and sustainable development.
VOLUNTEERS REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
18 years old or older. Have a strong l interest in farm work, environment education, and spending time in a beautiful, rural village located in a warm valley in the Andes.
Volunteers will be working with the people in their small, family farms, cooking their own meals with the leaders of this project, teaching, sharing community life.
HOGAR VIRGILIO GUERRERO
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
This juvenile prison is located in Quito. It provides legal confinement to young boys from all over Ecuador. This detention center is administered by catholic priests.
THEME AND AIMS OF PROJECT:
Juvenile prison for young boys 14 to 17 years old.
Hogar Virgilio Guerrero provides housing and education for boys who have a conflict with law.
The boys have work options in four different workshop, carpentry, metal work, carpentry, and ceramics. There is also a library and sports facilities for the boys and volunteers working in the center.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
Volunteers must be 20 years old or older; Must like to teach English. Volunteers may also work with the boys in the workshops. You may teach them how to use computers, or work in the library. Volunteers with a psychology interest are welcome.
HUERTO COMUNITARIO LUMBISI/FEVI

LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Our LUMBISI/FEVI community garden is located in the small, native town of Lumbisi, in the eastern valley, in the surroundings of Quito. There are about 80 families in the community, most of the families work in agriculture and construction.
THEME AND AIMS OF THE PROJECT
The Lumbisi community garden is a learning space for volunteers interested in traditional andean agriculture, community work, and spending time in nature. Volunteers will learn from the elderly in the community how to grow corn, beans, and other vegetables.
The vegetables and fruit we grow in the garden will help in the nutrition of the children and the elderly in the community.
VOLUNTEERS REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
16 years old or older. Have a special interest in agriculture, environment education, and spending time in a rural village surrounded by mountains. Desire to serve the children and elderly in the community.
Volunteers will need to spend time in the vegetable garden, take care of the plants, water and nurture them. Make seeds beds, Pick up vegetables and fruits and deliver them to the children in the pre school, and the elderly in the community. Help the elderly with their own vegetable gardens.
PARQUE ECOLOGICO LUMBISI
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Lumbisi, rural community of about 300 families in the eastern valley outside Quito. 40 minutes bus ride from Quito.
Most of the people in Lumbisi are traditional farmers, carpenters, take care of farm animals, work in construction projects in Quito.
THEME AND AIMS OF THE PROJECT
The Lumbisi community has decided to protect their ancestral land. mountains and forests.
The community is working on opening an ecological park for the community.
They are working on making trails, reforesting their mountains, constructing picnic areas, making a bike route, flower gardens, starting environment education projects.
VOLUNTEERS REQUIREMENTS AND DAILY ACTIVITIES:
18 years old or older. Have a strong interest in environment education, sociology, eco turism, anthropology, or rural community development. Willingness to live in a rural village surrounded by mountains.
Volunteers will work under the guidance of the elders in the community.
TONSUPA, GONZALO PIZARRO SCHOOL
LOCATION AND COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
This public elementary school is located in the coast of Ecuador, in Esmeraldas Province.
Six hours bus ride from Quito.
The school has an attendace of 100 kids. Teachers have large numbers of students in each classroom, as the school is understaffed.
Volunteers will help teachers in improving the education of the children and the future of the community.

18 years old or older. Teaching skills, patience, have a heart for children.
